In brief · As of 26 October 2026
In Germany, suitable iPhones and Google Pixel smartphones can already send emergency messages via satellite. This is a limited service for emergencies. For the German mobile offers reviewed here, ordinary calls and internet access directly via satellite are still announced or being tested. Internet through a separate satellite antenna uses a different connection path.
On a hike, the last mobile signal disappears. Can the phone switch to a satellite? That depends on what you need: emergency help, a message to someone, or internet access. Different services address these three needs.
What works in Germany today
| Service | Status in Germany | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Apple: Emergency SOS via satellite [1] | Available on supported devices | Suitable iPhone 14 or later; check the manufacturer's conditions |
| Google: Satellite SOS [2] | Available on supported devices | Google lists Pixel 9 and later, excluding Pixel 9a; check setup requirements |
| Apple: ordinary messages via satellite [3] | Germany is absent from the availability list | Suitable iPhone and service approval in the country of use required |
| Telekom: Satellite-to-Mobile with Starlink [4] | Launch announced for 2028 | Future compatible smartphone and a suitable service plan |
| Vodafone / Satellite Connect Europe; O2 / OQ Technology [5] [6] | Rollout preparations or testing partnership | Announced partnerships and tests; German consumer plans remain unspecified |
| Internet through a satellite terminal, such as Starlink Mini [9] | Usable with additional hardware | Terminal, power supply and subscription; the phone uses the terminal's Wi-Fi |
Three connection paths that are often confused
Our technical guide to Direct-to-Cell and 5G NTN explains the differences between Direct-to-Device, Direct-to-Cell and 5G NTN, and how the satellite link connects to the mobile network.
iPhone and Pixel: emergency messaging is already available
Apple lists Germany as a supported country for Emergency SOS via satellite. The feature is intended for suitable iPhone 14 and later models. It sends an emergency message when mobile and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. Apple requires a clear view of the sky and horizon. Imported devices may be subject to restrictions. [1]
Google also lists Germany among the countries supporting Satellite SOS. According to the documentation accessed on the review date, it supports Google Pixel 9 and later devices, excluding Pixel 9a. Approval for the particular device remains decisive. The help page also describes a demo for learning how to use the feature before a trip. [2]
These emergency functions send messages to emergency services. Calls, ordinary messaging and internet access each require their own service.
Can I send ordinary messages this way?
Apple offers ordinary satellite messaging as a separate service. Its country list at the review date includes the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan. In Germany, the available function is satellite SOS. [3]
For announcements about new Galaxy models, check the country and operator details. Samsung's February 2026 announcement describes different partnerships across several regions; its European availability footnote names the United Kingdom. It does not specify activation for German mobile subscriptions. [8]
What Telekom, Vodafone and O2 are planning
Telekom and Starlink: In March 2026, Telekom announced Satellite-to-Mobile for several European markets, including Germany, with a planned launch in 2028. The intended services include messaging, voice and data for compatible smartphones. Supported devices and plans will be specified for the particular service. [4]
Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile: Their joint venture, Satellite Connect Europe, began operating in spring 2026 and is intended to provide satellite services for European mobile operators. The announcement describes the company's establishment; it leaves German consumer pricing and availability unspecified. [5]
O2 Telefónica and OQ Technology: In June 2026, Telefónica Deutschland announced a partnership for direct satellite-to-smartphone connections. The announcement describes tests using its own mobile spectrum in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The partnership is therefore in the development and testing phase. [6]
A further development followed on 19 October 2026: Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone plan to explore a joint application for European mobile satellite service spectrum. The companies say the letter of intent leaves existing partnerships in place. The announcement gives no consumer launch date. [7]
Starlink on a phone: where the extra antenna comes in
A smartphone can already connect to a satellite terminal's Wi-Fi. Starlink Mini has a Wi-Fi router built into the terminal. The extra antenna handles the satellite link, while the phone uses Wi-Fi for the short connection to it. The terminal needs power and a suitable installation position. [9]
Whether this setup suits you depends on its purpose and the hardware, power and subscription costs involved.
Why a clear view of the sky matters
The satellite needs a suitable radio path. For its direct connection, Apple specifies an outdoor location with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Starlink warns about obstructions when installing its terminal. Building walls and dense tree canopies can block the path. [1] [9]
The principle is similar to terrestrial mobile radio: the entire radio path matters. Our article on frequencies and radio range explains more. Its diagrams cover terrestrial mobile connections.
What to check before a trip
- The function you need: Emergency messaging, ordinary messages or internet access?
- Your particular device: Check the model, software and, where relevant, country of purchase against the manufacturer's documentation.
- Country and subscription: Check approval for Germany or your destination.
- The demo: Learn how to use an available satellite feature through its designated test mode. Avoid triggering a real emergency call during a trial. [10]
- For a terminal: Plan for power, placement and the appropriate satellite subscription.
The intended service guides device choice: requesting help while travelling calls for different equipment from providing internet access in a motorhome.
